MALCOLM MACLEOD

  • Connections: Newfoundland’s Pre-Confederation Links With Canada and the World

After growing up at Armadale (then a suburb, now part of Halifax, Nova Scotia), MacLeod gained a B.A. at Dalhousie University, M.A. at the University of Ottawa. He joined the faculty at Memorial University in 1968, left for a period of time and returned to stay 1978. He has just retired from Memorial’s History Department.

His hobbies included bird-watching and feeding, rough carpentry (desks especially), jogging and reading. His proudest non-academic accomplishment was becoming President of the Newfoundland Historical Society in 1993. He was the first transplanted mainlander to hold this post, which mirrors the Newfoundland-Canada connections discussed in his new book.
