Marilyn Porter was born and raised on a farm in North Wales, UK. She later attended school in England and Switzerland and took degrees from Trinity College in Dublin, Oxford University and Bristol University. She taught in elementary and high schools in England and in Africa, and in technical colleges and universities (Bristol and Manchester) before coming to Newfoundland in 1980. Since then she has been a faculty member at Memorial University, teaching in the Sociology Department and the Women’s Studies Programme. For ten years her research has concentrated on the lives of rural women in other countries, with particular emphasis on the women of Indonesia.
